Chapman University

Located in Orange County, Chapman University has an undergraduate enrollment of 5,300 students and a student-faculty ratio of 14:1.  Popular majors include Business, Film/Video, Speech Communications, Psychology, and Public Relations. With 20 varsity sports, Chapman competes in the NCAA Division III.

UC Santa Cruz

Located in Santa Cruz with an undergraduate enrollment of 15,700 students, Santa Cruz is relatively small for a UC. The beautiful campus is filled with redwood trees and overlooks Monterey Bay. Strong programs include marine sciences, biology, psychology, and linguistics.  The “Slugs” compete in NCAA Div. III.

CalArts

Considered a training ground, a professional center, and a laboratory of the arts all rolled into one, CalArts enrolls 986 students at its Valencia campus in one of six schools: Critical Studies, Dance, Art, Film/Video, Music, and Theater.  For undergraduates, Cal Arts offers a BFA which requires students to take 48 units of Critical Studies in addition to their program requirements.  Standardized tests are not required but auditions/portfolios are a big factor for admissions as are application essays and students’ high school transcripts.

University of the Pacific

Located in Stockton, California, University of the Pacific is a medium-sized private university with 3,800 undergraduates and is considered quite selective.  The University houses 9 schools and 80 undergraduate majors.  Popular majors include business, biology, and visual and performing arts. Twenty percent of students go Greek and San Francisco is only 90 miles away.  The Tigers compete in NCAA Div. I.

IDC Herzliya

BA in Business, Government, Psychology, or Communications in only 3 years through programs taught entirely in English.  Founded in 1994, IDC-Herzliya is the first private college in Israel.  A world-renowned faculty at its Raphael Recanati International School teaches students from 82 countries.  Additionally, IDC has exchange programs with 40 universities throughout the world.

DeVry University

An accredited, for-profit university with a flexible, hybrid model of teaching that includes traditional and online programs, DeVry has 90 campuses nationwide.  Popular majors include Business Administration and Computer Systems Analysis.  DeVry is offering a $20,000 scholarship for students with a 2.8 GPA.

FIDM

The Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is an accredited (WASC) for-profit private college located in downtown LA with satellite campuses in Orange County, San Diego, and San Francisco.  FIDM offers 24 Associate degrees and 10 Bachelor’s degrees in programs ranging from Manufacturing & Product Development to Textile Production and Set Design.

Academy of Art University is an accredited school of art and design located in San Francisco with an undergraduate enrollment of over 10,000 students.  Popular majors include fashion design, animation, film production, illustration, and graphic design.

Located in the small town of Pullman, Washington, Washington State University has an undergraduate enrollment of 23,135.  Students can choose from 100 majors in 12 colleges including communications in the Edward R. Murrow (alum) College of Communications where students help run the university’s television and radio station.  Greek life is big with over 40% of students belonging to a fraternity or sorority.  WSU competes in NCAA Div. I.

CSUN has an undergraduate enrollment of 31,500 students and is located on 356 acres in nearby Northridge, making it one of the nation’s largest single campus universities. The new Valley Performing Arts Center makes CSUN the cultural heart of the valley as well.  Popular majors include business, social sciences, psychology, and communications/journalism.  The Matadors compete in NCAA Div. I athletics.

UC Santa Barbara

Bordered by the Pacific, UCSB has an undergraduate enrollment of 18,315 students.  UCSB’s strongest programs are the sciences as well as a notably strong accounting program. The College of Creative Studies allows UCSB students to major in the sciences, math, art, and literature, with a program tailored  to individual students’ strengths and goals while working closely with their faculty advisors.  Students rigorously explore their field while they engage in research usually reserved for graduate students.  As the headquarters of UC’s Education Abroad Program, students can study abroad at any of 100 host universities worldwide. The Gauchos compete in NCAA Div. I.

Oregon State University

Located in Corvallis, a small town in Eastern Oregon, Oregon State is slightly smaller and less selective than its rival, University of Oregon.  Once known mostly for its excellence in the study of agriculture, Oregon State is gaining recognition for its strong programs in biotechnology, engineering, and business.  Fiske rates Oregon State a “Best Buy” with total cost of attendance at estimated at $39,000 for out-of-staters.  “The Beavers” compete in NCAA Div. I.

University of Oklahoma

University of Oklahoma, located in Norman, Oklahoma’s third-largest city, has an undergraduate enrollment of 18,503 students.  Home to the National Weather Research Center, the largest weather research center of its kind in the nation, “OU” has strong programs in meteorology, engineering, and geology-related fields.  OU also has a Native American Studies program that teaches more Native American languages for credit than any other institution.  Greek life is big here and so is football. The Oklahoma Sooners compete in the Big 12 Conference.

Located in Newark, Delaware, a small city, University of Delaware is a not-too-large public university with an undergraduate enrollment of 15,548.  Delaware offers over 135 academic programs in seven colleges with notable programs in engineering, business, and the biological sciences and many opportunities for undergrad research.  Over two-thirds of the student body are out-of-staters.  The “Blue Hens” compete in NCAA Div. I.

Located the wonderful college town of Eugene, University of Oregon is a large public university with an undergraduate enrollment of 21,862.  The beautiful campus has strong programs in communications, music, creative writing, and humanities as well as the number one program in the nation in the increasingly popular field of Sustainable Architecture and Design.  Clark Honors College is strong as well as selective.  The Ducks compete in NCAA Div. I.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

With an undergraduate enrollment of just over 4,400 students and a prime location in the heart of Boston, MIT is the premier university for all things tech including engineering, computer science, and management science.  MIT graduates have formed enough companies to employ one fourth of all the workforce in Silicon Valley.  Admission is extremely competitive with an admission rate below 9%.  Greek life plays a big role in the social scene at MIT as do practical jokes including welding shut Harvard’s gates.  The Engineers compete in Div. III in 33 varsity sports.

Occidental College

Yes, there are great, small liberal arts colleges in the West and Occidental (Oxy) is one of them.  Located between Pasadena and Glendale near Eagle Rock, Occidental has just over 2,000 undergrads. Fiske calls Oxy’s Diplomacy and World Affairs Program “innovative”.  It features internships at the UN and in D.C.  Other strong programs include English, music, and chemistry. Oxy competes in NCAA Div. III.  Notable alum: Barack Obama.

University of Wyoming

Located in Laramie, approximately two hours North of Denver, University of Wyoming enrolls 10,000 undergrads and offers nearly 200 areas of study.  Popular majors include nursing, education, psychology, and business.  The Cowboys compete in NCAA Div. I.

Louisiana State University

LSU is located in Baton Rouge on the banks of the Mississippi on what was once a plantation.  Covering 2,000 acres dotted with huge oak trees, LSU enrolls over 22,000 undergrads.  Antebellum mansions house fraternities and sororities and football is king here.  Popular majors include biology, psychology, mass communications, and mechanical engineering.  The Tigers compete in NCAA Div. I.
