Boston University

With an undergraduate enrollment of 16,137, Boston University is one of the largest private universities in the world. BU’s 10 undergraduate schools and colleges offer over 250 majors.  It has an urban campus and its strongest programs include business, social sciences, natural sciences, journalism, communications, music, and engineering. The Terriers compete in NCAA Div. 1.

Brown University

An Ivy League school with 6,100 undergrads located in Providence, Brown stands apart from other Ivies in the sense of freedom that it affords its students.  Brown offers its students an open curriculum which is free from general education requirements and it allows students to be assessed with regular letter grades or “Satisfactory”.  Popular majors include biology, history, international relations, English, and political science.  Brown competes in NCAA Div. I.

Hamilton College

Located in the small town of Clinton, NY, Hamilton enrolls just under 2,000 undergrads and its curriculum is “pure liberal arts” (Fiske).  Accepting just 27% of its applicants, US News considers Hamilton “most selective”.  Strong programs include economics, mathematics, government, biology, and psychology.  Greek life is strong here and the “Continentals” compete in NCAA Div. III.

Harvey Mudd College

Located in Claremont and part of the Claremont Colleges, Harvey Mudd has found a way to marry humanities with science and engineering programs so outstanding that they rival nearby Caltech.  Although the undergrad population is under 800 students, a greater percentage of  students from Harvey Mudd go on to receive their Ph.D.s than from any other school in the nation.

Bradley University

Bradley University is a private college with an undergrad population of just under 5,000 students in the small city of Peoria, IL.  Undergrads can choose from over 100 programs in five colleges with most popular majors being engineering, psychology, and education.  Thirty percent of undergrads go Greek and the Braves compete in NCAA Div. I.

Washington University St. Louis

Rated “most selective” by US News, Washington University accepted 16% of their applicants in 2014.  A medium-sized university located in St. Louis, Wash U has strong pre-professional programs within 5 schools including Arts& Sciences, Architecture, Art, Business, and Engineering.  With a beautiful campus, a relaxed, Midwestern feel, opportunities to conduct undergraduate research, and a great social scene, Wash U has a lot to offer and has seen applications skyrocket in recent years.

Nichols College

Located in Dudley, Massachusetts, Nichols College is a small undergraduate business college with an enrollment of 1,202 students.  Nichols offers students a BS in Business Administration or a BA in Liberal Arts.  Students may also be admitted into an honors program or a 5 year accelerated BS/MBA program.

Franklin University Switzerland

Located in Lugano, Switzerland, Franklin University is an accredited American liberal arts college with an undergraduate enrollment of 450 students. Students at Franklin are required to participate in the Academic Travel Program where students travel to destinations around the globe in accordance with a particular theme such as economic, art history, or international relations.  Led by faculty, students travel for two weeks each semester.  Classes are taught in English. 

Loyola Marymount University

LMU is a medium-sized Roman Catholic university right in LA overlooking the Pacific with strong programs in film and television, business, and engineering.  A number of programs are designed to support freshmen so their first year is successful.  Opportunities for internships and studying abroad are plentiful.  LMU competes in Div. I athletics.

Vanderbilt University

Highly selective Vanderbilt University is located in Nashville and has an undergraduate enrollment of 6,817.  Strong programs in music (Nashville) and the arts as well as education, economics, and engineering.  Greek life plays a dominant role in campus happenings and “The Commodores” compete in NCAA Div. I.

UCLA

UCLA receives more applications than any other school in the nation and undergraduate enrollment is 27,358.  Ninety-seven percent of incoming freshman ranked in the top 10% of their graduating class in high school (The College Board).  Strong programs include film and television, music, engineering, journalism, biology, psychology, and economics. The Bruins compete in NCAA Div. I.

Boise State University

Located in Boise, Idaho, Boise State enrolls just over 19,000 undergrads.  Students can choose from 170 academic programs housed in 8 colleges and can join over 200 campus clubs.  Boise State offers the nation’s only degree in Raptor Biology, the study of birds of prey.  The Broncos compete in NCAA Div. I Mountain West Conference.

Cal Lutheran University

Cal Lutheran University, a private university with an undergraduate enrollment of 2,804, is set in Thousand Oaks. As a Lutheran university, students are required to take two religion courses as part of the core curriculum but students represent many faiths. CLU offers undergrads 36 majors, 34 minors, and 7 pre-professional programs including a BS in Exercise Science, an interdisciplinary program that prepares students for the fields of allied health, human movement, and physical education.  CLU competes in NCAA Div. III.

Brandeis University

Named for the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice, Louis Dembitz Brandeis, Brandeis University is a highly selective university (US News-“most selective”) located just outside Boston with an undergraduate enrollment of 3,341 students. Known equally for excellence in the sciences and global studies, Brandeis is also known for its outstanding Near Eastern and Judaic studies as it houses the largest faculty in the field outside Israel.  Although over half its students are Jewish, Brandeis is committed to diversity and social justice as demonstrated by its many chapels and designated prayer spaces for its Catholic, Protestant, and Muslim students.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

With an undergraduate enrollment of just over 4,400 students and a prime location in the heart of Boston, MIT is the premier university for all things tech including engineering, computer science, and management science.  MIT graduates have formed enough companies to employ one fourth of all the workforce in Silicon Valley.  Admission is extremely competitive with an admission rate below 9%.  Greek life plays a big role in the social scene at MIT as do practical jokes including welding shut Harvard’s gates.  The Engineers compete in Div. III in 33 varsity sports.

Tulane University

Located on 110 acres in uptown New Orleans lies Tulane University with an undergraduate population of 8,400 students.  Tulane has strong programs in the natural sciences, environmental sciences, Latin American Studies, and “Political Economy” where students study an interdisciplinary mix of economics, political science, and philosophy. According to the Common Data Set for 2013-2014, over 31% of full-time undergraduate students received an average non-need-based (merit) award of over $19,000.  Greek life engages 26% of male undergrads and 40% of female undergrads.  Mardi Gras is such a huge event that classes are cancelled for two days.  Tulane competes in NCAA Div. 1.

University of Kansas

Located in Lawrence, Kansas, a quintessential college town, University of Kansas offers its 20,000 undergrads strong pre-professional programs, extensive undergraduate research opportunities, an excellent honors program, Big 12 Conference sports, and a lively social scene.  Noted programs include architecture, business, engineering, and premed.  For out-of-state students, University of Kansas offers different levels of automatic scholarships of over $10,000 per year for qualifying students that apply by Nov. 1.  They also offer a 4 year fixed tuition agreement guaranteeing that tuition does not change for 4 years.

Colorado State University

Located in the small city of Fort Collins at the foothills of the Rockies, Colorado State University is a public university with an undergraduate enrollment of 21,000.  CSU offers 60 undergraduate majors and strong programs include prevet and the STEM fields. The CSU Rams compete in Div. I-A.

Texas Christian University

TCU is a medium-sized private university in Fort Worth, TX with a lot of school spirit and strong programs in business, nursing, communications, and engineering.  As in many Texas schools, football is king and so is Greek life.  TCU is affiliated with the “Disciples of Christ” but Fiske notes that “the atmosphere is not overtly religious”.  Less expensive than nearby archrival Southern Methodist University, TCU enrolls just over 8,000 undergrads including 63% from Texas.  The Horned Frogs compete in the NCAA Div. 1 Big 12 Conference and won the Rose Bowl in 2011.

Indiana University

Located in Bloomington with an undergraduate enrollment of 30,000, Indiana University is a top public university.  Although it is most known for its stellar Men’s Basketball team, IU has a world-renowned music conservatory (The Jacobs School of Music), and top programs in business, biology, and journalism.  The Greek life is strong here and Bloomington is a fabulous college town.

Northern Arizona University

Located in beautiful Flagstaff, Arizona, Northern Arizona University enrolls 21,000 undergrads with 40% coming from outside of Arizona.  Flagstaff experiences all four seasons with 300 days of sunshine annually.  Popular majors include business, education, and the liberal arts and sciences. Through the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE), admitted California students will pay 1.5 times the instate tuition or $13,680 for the 2014-15 academic year for students of all majors except nursing and dental hygiene.  Furthermore, NAU pledges not to raise tuition for 4 years.  The Lumberjacks compete in NCAA Division I.

University of Richmond

Located in the former capital of the Confederacy, University of Richmond may be surprisingly progressive for a Southern school, describing itself as “a private university for the public good”. University of Richmond enrolls 3,000 undergrads and strong programs include business and international relations as well as pre-professional programs.  Richmond has the only business school located in a liberal arts college that ranks nationally in the top 20 undergraduate business programs. US News considers admission to University of Richmond “more selective” as they admit only 30% of applicants.  One-third of undergrads partake in Greek life.  The Spiders compete in NCAA Div. I which is unusual for a small liberal arts college.

Marymount University

Located in Arlington, VA just minutes from DC, Marymount University is a Catholic University with an undergraduate enrollment of just over 2,400 students of which 70% are female.  Popular majors include nursing, business administration, and psychology.  Marymount competes in NCAA Div. III.

College Visits the Week of November 11, 2013

University of Delaware	11/13/13	Support	CCC

Located in the state capital, Columbus, Ohio State is big in every way. The biggest of the Big Ten, OSU has 40,000 undergrads and offers 175 majors in 19 colleges. Its huge sports program fields 39 varsity teams, 50 intramural teams, and another 50 sports clubs. It stands on 3,000 acres making it the third largest campus in the nation. Notable programs include business, education, industrial design, African American Studies, and engineering. OSU’s honors program limits class size to 25 students and is taught by professors. 

Located in Newark, Delaware, a small city, University of Delaware is a not-too-large public university with an undergraduate enrollment of 15,548. Delaware offers over 135 academic programs in seven colleges with notable programs in engineering, business, and the biological sciences and many opportunities for undergrad research. Over two-thirds of the student body are out-of-staters. The “Blue Hens” compete in NCAA Div. I.

College Visits the Week of November 5, 2013

Located in Corvallis, a small town in Eastern Oregon, Oregon State is slightly smaller and less selective than its rival, University of Oregon.  Once known mostly for its excellence in the study of agriculture, Oregon State is gaining recognition for its strong programs in biotechnology, engineering, and business.  Fiske rates Oregon State a “Best Buy” with total cost of attendance at estimated at $39,000 for out-of-staters.  “The Beavers” compete in NCAA Div. I.

CSUN has an undergraduate enrollment of 31,500 students and is located on 356 acres in nearby Northridge, making it one of the nation’s largest single campus universities. The new Valley Performing Arts Center makes CSUN the cultural heart of the valley as well.  Popular majors include business, social sciences, psychology, and communications/journalism.  The Matadors compete in NCAA Div. I athletics.

Interested in going to school in Israel? At IDC-Herzliya, students can get a BA in Business, Government, Psychology, or Communications in only 3 years through programs taught entirely in English.  Founded in 1994, IDC-Herzliya is the first private college in Israel.  A world-renowned faculty at its Raphael Recanati International School teaches students from 82 countries. Additionally, IDC has exchange programs with 40 universities throughout the world.

University of Oklahoma, located in Norman, Oklahoma’s third-largest city, has an undergraduate enrollment of 18,503 students.  Home to the National Weather Research Center, the largest weather research center of its kind in the nation, “OU” has strong programs in meteorology, engineering, and geology-related fields.  OU also has a Native American Studies program that teaches more Native American languages for credit than any other institution. Greek life is big here and so is football.  The Oklahoma Sooners compete in the Big 12 Conference.
